You may recall that The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health recently awarded subcontracts through the COPD Learn More Breathe Better® campaign to several national and community-based lung health organizations to support efforts to improve awareness and understanding of COPD.
Since then, health organizations from New Hampshire to California have been hard at work educating the public about COPD and preparing to host COPD summits that will inform action plans to address the disease in each of their respective states. Through the convening of these summits, each organization will begin to build their state’s capacity to assess, diagnose, and treat COPD effectively, while eliminating barriers that often prevent populations from benefiting from COPD programs and resources. See below for a list of some of the state summits happening this year:
“These organizations have already provided tremendous support to the Campaign, building COPD awareness in their states and assisting with local COPD Learn More Breathe Better® campaign events,” said Dr. James Kiley, Director, Division of Lung Diseases, NHLBI. “We’re grateful for their efforts, and pleased to support them as they continue to carry forward important messages about COPD detection and treatment.”
Country Conquers COPD Heads West The next series of the COPD Learn More Breathe Better® campaign’s Country Conquers COPD events are underway and first up we’re headed to the Country Thunder music festival in Florence, Arizona on April 14th-17th. The Campaign will be using the festival as an opportunity to deliver educational messages about the signs and symptoms of COPD and the importance of discussing it with a health care provider.
Almost two dozen of country music’s greatest acts including Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, and Kid Rock, take the stage over three days before an estimated 60,000 attendees. If you’re in the area, check out the Country Conquers COPD tent. We will be joined by the COPD Foundation, who will conduct mobile spirometry screening, and the American Lung Association in Arizona, providing important information about COPD. And don’t miss the Gibson Tour Bus with its interactive guitar stations.
Additional upcoming Country Conquers COPD events in 2010 include the Kentucky State Fair (Louisville, KY: August 19-29) and the Chicago Country Music Festival (Chicago, IL: October 8-9).
